Struggle Between UMWA and PMWA in Southern Illinois

In the 1930s Southern Illinois saw fierce union battles led by United Mine Workers leader John L. Lewis against the rival Progressive Mine Workers of America. Key figures included William Sneed and Ray Edmondson, with violent clashes such as the 1932 Mulkeytown incident. The PMWA asserted cuts in wage votes spurred its formation. authorities prosecuted many PMWA members, while UMWA claimed dominance in Illinois coal production.
