Wind Ensemble tours England with Russian musicians in Stratford and London
SIUC Wind Ensemble led by Hanes toured England May 20 to 29, performing with the Belarussian Central Band of the Ministry of the Interior from Minsk in St Helens and Stratford upon Avon, and joining a massed band at Kneller Hall London. The group of 150 musicians played Sousa and Bennett selections, with Jennifer Presar as guest horn soloist, and toured Oxford Chester Liverpool and London. Funds came from SIU offices and an alumni association, plus a 1000 copy cookbook fundraiser. The trip drew 1500 concertgoers for an outdoor finale with fireworks and left students eager for future tours.

Three men arrested on methamphetamine charges in Marion
Three Buckner residents were arrested Thursday night after a routine traffic stop near West DeYoung and Russell Streets. Driver Isidoro V. Estevez and passengers Leslie C. Groves and Deborah A. Kalfain were charged with possession of methamphetamine and chemicals used to manufacture it. Estevez faces extra counts of illegal transportation of alcohol, no valid registration and no valid insurance. Estevez and Groves were jailed at Williamson County.
