Marion Officials Propose Social Security Shift From IMRF

Marion Finance Commissioner Bill Armstrong blasted the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund as forced participation and urged switching to Social Security. He noted Marion has paid $76,327.56 into IMRF while employees have drawn only $9,732 in benefits since the plan began four years five months ago, with five employees drawing $10 to $60 monthly. Employees contributed $27,480 and $21,173 came from a direct tax. Armstrong said replacing IMRF could save about $14,000 for the city and $9,000 for employees. The council also approved a two year oil drilling lease at the city park and a bid for oil, while a census to boost motor fuel taxes was proposed.
