SIU Faculty Propose Self Assessment for New Student Union
Southern Illinois University faculty plan assessment activity fees to fund a $4.8 million student union. The plan, drafted by a faculty committee led by John Lonergan, will be presented to SIU President D. W. Morris within a week and voted on by a faculty referendum next fall. Details on amounts were not disclosed. The committee rejected using the secretary of the faculty office as a center due to space limits, proposing a designated area inside the union instead. The 1,000-person faculty and staff group would have access, while students could use the area too. A May referendum previously approved a $4 activity fee hike for union construction, planned in three stages with the first due by summer 1959.
