Nine miners face a 72 by 19 by 7 foot rock slab collapse at Zeigler Coal No 11. Illinois house spares correctional center from budget cuts
Illinois lawmakers spared the Thomson Correctional Center from budget cuts that would have opened three cellhouses for six months and closed Ed Jenison Work Camp and other facilities. Big reductions hit Sheridan and Menard centers plus education funding including universities, scholarships, and community colleges. Governors and lawmakers traded cuts and exemptions, with a special session urged to act on vetoes and reductions.
