Phelps backs amendment defining a marriage
Springfield area debate over a Federal Marriage Amendment pits supporters led by Rep. David D. Phelps against critics like Rick Garcia of Equality Illinois. Phelps argues the constitution should define marriage as between a man and a woman to strengthen families. Garcia calls the move discriminatory and harmful to gay and lesbian citizens. A Shimkus aide defers on support while affirming marriage as a sacred bond.

Law firm booted off Ryan's case
In Chicago, U S District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer removed the firm Alzheimer & Gray from Gov. George Ryan campaign corruption case due to serious conflicts of interest. Citizens for Ryan and former campaign manager Scott Fawell face charges over alleged use of state employees and taxpayer dollars for political work tied to bribes for driver's licenses. The judge noted the conflicts were unwaived and could delay trial as new counsel must be appointed. Ryan has not been charged with wrongdoing, though the court described the governor as the beneficiary of the campaign fund. Federal prosecutors say 170000 dollars in bribes traced to the fund. Ryan did not seek a second term.
