Jackson jail renovation may cost 1.3 to 1.4 million

Jackson County plans to renovate the current jail on the third floor of the courthouse to meet state space guidelines. Architects Fischer Stein Associates and Powers Associates propose three options, all replacing the antiquated elevator and adding exterior stairs, with possible roof exercise area and relocation of county offices such as treasurer, county clerk, and superintendent of schools. The plan follows voter rejection of a 6.5 million bond for a new jail and the Illinois Department of Corrections threat to shut down the current facility by 1986.

Jackson health board delays building plan and budget issue

The Jackson County Health Department will seek budget time approval for a building fund and align with the county board on long range planning. For months the plan to build an 8000 square foot office near Murphysboro and Carbondale at 350000 has faced opposition for misclassified funds and master planning needs. A July planning panel review, August board action, and hearings are planned, while a board administrator may be studied to support policy implementation.
