Syrians attack Israelis in Lebanon threaten wider war
Syrian helicopter gunships and ground forces attacked advancing Israeli units in Lebanon east of Beirut and in the Bekaa, while Israeli warplanes bombed Syrian missile sites. Reports say Syria doubled its Lebanon force to 65,000 and battles left heavy Israeli casualties. Israel claimed some successes, including downing a MiG and a helicopter. Arafat urged Arab intervention from west Beirut as fighting neared full-scale war. First Lady Nancy Reagan met a child in Bonn during the Reagan visit to West Germany.
