West German, American, and Israeli investigators pressed the hunt for Josef Mengele after tips and a Paraguay lead. A house in Gunzburg yielded letters and possible Mengele contacts, guiding probes to Sao Paulo where a cemetery burial and a drowning report raise questions about Mengele's fate.
West German prosecutor Hans-Eberhard Klein said evidence suggests Mengele may have lived in Sao Paulo Brazil while death there remains unverified. Brazilian reports of a drowned man in 1979 and exhumation in Austria are being checked. Wiesenthal warned the body could be false while investigators pursue bone tests and identity questions.
