Wife and governor clash over ERA amid shared Missouri ties
Linda Miller, state NOW president, openly challenges Gov. James R. Thompson on ERA ratification while her husband Jeffrey Miller directs Illinois Public Aid. The couple, once school sweethearts from Kabul, say their separate jobs and mutual respect keep their marriage intact even as NOW threatens to oppose Thompson’s re election if ERA fails. Linda may quit NOW if ERA stalls, while Jeffrey stresses loyalty to the governor and avoids public comment on ERA. The tension underscores a larger battle over equal rights while their private life remains steady.
