Illinois tests generic drug substitution starting July
Illinois will allow patients to shop for drug prices as a generic substitution law takes effect July 1. The state mailed lists of 175 substitute substances and 1,600 products to physicians and pharmacists. Doctors may permit substitutions or forbid them, and pharmacists may offer brand or generic options. Officials expect consumer savings and note monitors from the University of Illinois will track the program.
