Illinois House moves to resurrect the ERA in 1978 vote

Illinois legislators debate reviving the Equal Rights Amendment after a narrow defeat. Rep. Giddy Dyer and supporters push a motion to reconsider or a new ratification resolution, sent to a committee for passage before a floor vote. Key votes favored Dunn Richmond Hart Harris, with Winchester Birchler opposing. The win is seen as a setback for national ratification by the 1979 deadline, amid black lawmakers' dissent and calls for extension. The League of Women Voters funds lobbying. Phyllis Schlafly notes the victory from Alton.
