Local Link, an Murphysboro based ISP, has acquired MidAmerica Net of Marion. The deal, finalized Wednesday, doubles Local Link’s regional footprint to about 3,000 since MidAmerica Net also reported 3,000 customers last year. Expanded options include anti spam and anti virus services plus extended support hours. User names passwords and dial up connections remain unchanged while Local Link plans to broaden service with wireless broadband.
Linda Rush reports that Tim Shepherd and four other teens from Church of the Good Shepherd in Carbondale will travel to Cuba on a youth retreat, seeking open mindedness and cultural bonds. Olivia Pape notes it is a once in a lifetime chance to meet Christian teens from around the world, with Nancy Davis of SIU Carbondale acting as chaperone.
Youths from Church of the Good Shepherd will be "for hire" to perform odd jobs to raise funds for their August Cuba trip. Heavy spring rains slowed Marion road and building work at Aisin Manufacturing, yet vice president John Donovan says production will begin in July with a staggered schedule. He credits Herrin officials for completing water work that helped recover construction progress.
A Franklin County grassroots drive has collected about 43000 for Franklin Hospital in one month. Maggie Flanagan of the Southern Illinois Community Foundation praises the effort saying it embodies the community foundation mission and notes most donations are 20 to 25 dollars, showing strong local support.
Morris McDaniel, longtime Carbondale official, is retiring after 31 years of service. He started as a water meter reader in 1970, became code enforcement director in 1974, and has spent 17 years guiding the building and neighborhood services division with a 1.1 million dollar budget. City leaders praised his steady hands and good humor, while colleagues recalled his candid wit and daily cheer.
