Gwaii Tuna Fleet Runs May August Seasonal Surge
Gwaii’s tuna fishermen run a four month season from May to August when most of the annual catch is made. Hawaiian boats fish within 40 miles of the islands delivering fresh catch daily to the cannery. The average boat has 10 men, larger clippers 16 to 24, operates on a 35 to 65 percent split with crew earning most of the gross. War time disruption eased and Hawaii’s haul nears 15 million pounds, a prewar high.
