Springfield June 6 UP Pulaski County State's Attorney Warner Wall faces possible disbarment over alleged gambling ties. Wall says he is the victim of political persecution and claims funds were used for county business. He cites testimony from judges, bank presidents and officials dating back 15 to 20 years.

Truck bed collapse injures thirty seven field workers

Thirty seven Negro cotton pickers from Cairo and Future City were injured when the truck bed broke loose near the Birds Missouri bridge on U S Highway 61 across the Mississippi. Seven remained hospitalized in Cairo at St Marys hospital. the rest received treatment and were released. Names of admitted victims include Bernice Wood Dorothy Ross Nancy Greensdale and others. The driver Samuel Brook was uninjured.

Mauna Loa Eruptions Ease After Violent Fireworks Display

Mauna Loa slowed after five days of violent lava activity. Rivers of lava formed dikes and lakes along the southern flank while an earthquake forced 30 families to flee. Seismographs were knocked out on the island.

The family chose a long distance journey to place Storm with the Seeing Eye Corporation after realizing his size made city handling difficult. Hickenlooper Wins Iowa Primary Amid Tight Race

Des Moines reports show Senator Bourke B. Hickenlooper leading in the Republican gubernatorial and senatorial contests as precinct returns roll in. Albert J. Loveland backs Brannan farm plan against Kraschel, while Gov. Beardsley secures renomination. Final tallies show Hickenlooper ahead with 174,510 votes to Thompson 24,248 and Wisdom 34,599. In Chateau Bigot Quebec on June 6 a large search ended as a 2000 man force withdrew. Authorities believe three year old Nicole Renaud wandered into a bear lair and was likely killed. Fresh claw marks were seen on a tree near the cottage.

State Expects to Cover All Expenditures

Springfield June 6 AP The state nears fiscal year end with spending 2 million dollars a month exceeding income for general government functions. Finance Director George B. Mitchell says dipping into the general revenue surplus will cover all expenditures and leave some left over.

Associate Hit As Shots Miss Young Shelton

Gunmen ambushed two men including Little Earl Shelton and his associate Dellas Wylie. Wylie was shot three times in the back and hospitalized in Flora with a fair chance of recovery after bullets struck while they sat at a garage on highway 45. Little Earl escaped unharmed.

Cairo liquor dealer seeks suit dismissal

U S District Judge Fred L Wham took under advisement Monday the motion by J B Wenger Cairo NL liquor dealer to dismiss a Georgia suit for 395340 dollars in liquor taxes. Georgia accuses Wenger and 11 Georgia dealers of importing 79068 gallons of liquor into Georgia from August 1 1949 to April 1 1950 without paying tax and warehouse fees.

Mattoon Father Kills Infant Then Himself in Tragedy

A 26-year-old father Herman Bergfeld and his 14 month old daughter Julia Lou were found shot to death in Mattoon. Police say Bergfeld used a .22 rifle to kill the child before turning the weapon on himself. His wife Myra, 24, reported hearing a shot and found the baby and later the husband.

Phone Tapping Legal For Divorce Evidence

New York June 6 AP state appeals court ruled that a man may have his telephone tapped to obtain divorce evidence against his wife. The decision overturned convictions of three men including Louis Appelbaum 49 who used the wire tapped records against his wife.

Governor Stevenson received 500 to 600 daily letters seeking help from a broad mix of readers. A farm boy asked for bus service to his mailbox while a woman sought a quilt in Illinois colors and a beauty pageant entry. The 1950 strawberry production in Union county matched 1949 levels per O R Nally and Frank Rendleman. Anna market sold 9000 cases at $6.83 per case. 1949 saw 8529 cases at $7.67. Cobden market handled about 10,000 cases at $6.50 to $7 per case, slightly down from 1949. Cucumbers are expected around June 25, with apples, then tomatoes by July 1.

Two Pittsburg Stores Looted in Early Monday Burglary

W G Polack Dies Concordia Seminary Historian

Rev. W Gustave Polack aged 59 longtime head of church history at Concordia seminary St Louis died after brain surgery in recent weeks He served 22 years as editor in chief of the Concordia Historical Institute quarterly and helped revise the hymnals for the Missouri Synod church body.
