Kerner Measure Amended Corporation Tax OK'd

Springfield June 6 Otto Kerner's amended bill to boost the corporation franchise tax passed the Illinois House 218 to 44 with Republican leaders supporting it. The amendment removed earned surplus, taxing only capital stock and paid in surplus. The bill would raise minimum tax from 10 to 50 and cap at 200,900 for industries and 350,000 for utilities, estimated to bring 38 million biannually. Some Republicans opposed citing impact on new industry. A separate sales tax bill was amended to 1 cent, with half to cut real estate taxes. Chicago Mayor Daley backs the measure. A Chicago Democrat predicted several colleagues may oppose it yet, risking a political trade to push it through.
