Southern Illinois school troubles in Jackson County
In Jackson County three small high schools and Pomona Grade School face reorganization. Pomona’s aging facilities and low tax base risk closure without consolidation with Murphysboro or Cobden. Trico and Mississippi Valley districts show small high schools but seek viable options, while Elverado and surrounding rural districts resist unit-district moves amid integration and funding concerns.

West Frankfort delays action on urban renewal plan
West Frankfort City Council delays final action on the urban renewal plan with a first phase estimated at 690240 dollars. Developer R A Nack Land Associates outlined funding from grants, cash, and credits while outlining a 10 year program including a one way loop around the central business district and parking improvements. An Oak Street petition opposing the loop was noted but not discussed. City officials expect a grant application if the plan proceeds and UD Department representatives will visit June 24. Separately the council accepted resignations and hired replacements for street and water plant positions.
