Board advances private college aid plan in Illinois

Illinois State Board of Higher Education unanimously backs a private college aid program with $14 million initial funding and a $500 subsidy cap per recipient, plus $100 or $200 subsidies by level. Governor Ogilvie supports the plan as amendments may follow. The board also approves Vietnamese studies center at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and lists other Title I projects and campus actions.

Nixon isolationists and Pearl Harbor search ends

The Navy ended the search for 73 seamen missing from the destroyer Evans after a collision with the Australian carrier Melbourne during SEATO maneuvers 650 miles southwest of Manila. The stern section was towed as a court of inquiry was ordered, with 199 survivors and one dead reported among Evans crew.

Accord reached on pullout from Vietnam

Officials expect a joint Midway announcement by President Nixon and Nguyen Van Thieu about the first unilateral withdrawal of American forces in Vietnam. A pullout around 50,000 troops is planned this year with initial units starting Sept 1, possibly conditioned by enemy responses.

Fires and blasts close two Gary schools after gas explosions

The state fire marshal ordered Wallace High School and another Gary school closed amid a string of about six gas explosions in a Glen Park area, injuring nine and leaving scores homeless. Mayor Hatcher cited a gas buildup as a likely cause. a one-square block evacuation was lifted after mains were checked.

Nixon urges renewed American idealism at Air Force Academy

President Nixon told Air Force Academy graduates that a resurgence of American idealism is needed to counter isolationists who would weaken global leadership. He warned against unilateral disarmament, stressed defense as servant to policy, and proposed a nine point creed for the armed forces while denying a Vietnam link to his remarks.

Illinois House debates judge tenure in for profit firms

A bill pending in the Illinois House would allow judges to continue holding positions in for profit corporations while serving on the bench. The House passed a bill creating an Illinois Consumer Council to aid consumers in purchasing. A proposal to grant a Madison County circuit judge widow the remainder of his salary was cut nearly in half by the House Appropriations Committee. Details on page 3.

West Frankfort Oil Line Leak Triggers Firemen's Night

West Frankfort firemen fought an underground oil line leak Tuesday night after a reported gasoline odor by Leslie Rose. Oil water and gas mixture spouted four feet in an alley near 205 N Horn St. Fire crews shut off the line and spread wood chips to control fumes, remaining until about 11 30 p.m. The ruptured line owned by William E Lampley was four feet underground and repair was planned.

Saigon forces face heavy losses as Dak To battles widen

Reports from Washington and Saigon say South Vietnamese troops and U S air and artillery strikes have killed about 945 North Vietnamese around Dak To in three weeks of fighting in the Central Highlands. The toll includes 760+ casualties total with Americans and South Vietnamese among the dead and missing.

Third year of Greater Egypt EDA grant approved

The Economic Development Administration announced a third year federal grant for Greater Egypt five county planning. The $170.9 budget backs a program running in Jackson Williamson Franklin Perry and Jefferson counties with health care and law enforcement planning, industrial study work, and active advisory committees after months of inactivity. Sens. Everett Dirksen and Charles Percy announced the grant.
