Southern Illinois tourism tour eyes scenic drive plan

Gov Richard Ogilvie Senator Charles Percy and Senator Everett Dirksen toured Southern Illinois Thursday and Friday to view scenic beauty and expansion plans for tourism. They endorsed the 160 mile George Rogers Clark Scenic Drive across Shawnee National Forest from Grand Tower to Cave-in-Rock as key to outdoor recreation growth, part of a seven year one million dollar program. They visited Oakwood Greens management area and Dixon Springs State Park then rode into Lusk Creek Canyon to assess a dam and park proposal amid petitions to save Lusk Creek as a wild river area and support for a 2300 acre recreational development.
