Soviet Premier Nikola Bulganin watches as Tito signs a joint declaration in Belgrade on Thursday. Tito joins Russia in backing Red China’s claim to Formosa in a bid to unite the two nations on policy toward Germany and Formosa.
Belgrade reports that Tito and the six Soviet leaders concluded their eight day talks with a general principles declaration on peaceful world problem solving. Khrushchev did not sign. Yugoslavia backed Red China's Formosa claims and UN seat, while seeking a democratic basis for German future.
Detroit June 3 AP tense bargaining nears strike deadline as Ford and UAW clash over supplementing unemployment compensation under a new contract. Ford reportedly accepted the principle of a guaranteed annual wage but differed on funding details including 26 week vs 52 week coverage and 65 to 80 percent take home pay. GM may follow, but no official word yet. union seeks about 18 to 55 million yearly funding for the plan.
Springfield June 3 AP An objection by a Peoria legislator delayed passage votes in the Illinois House on several appropriation bills including the University of Illinois two year. Rep Robert Burhans Republican protested acting on appropriations before the revenue picture is settled. Gov Stratton seeks a half cent sales tax increase to fund schools and mental hospitals, a proposal not yet voted on. Burhans said he did not oppose specific appropriations but opposed passing them without revenue clarity. Rep Ora Dillavou Champlain House Appropriations Committee chair agreed to postpone the bills until next Wednesday. The House advanced a passage vote on Rep Paul Powell Vienna's bill for a one cent sales tax boost for two years with cities and schools sharing proceeds. downstate cities would cut property taxes by 50 percent of the sales tax receipts.
Cloudy southern Illinois forecast shows partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures tonight and Saturday. Low tonight mid 60s, high Saturday upper 80s, low Saturday night upper 60s. Earlier readings include 7 a.m. 71 and yesterday 80. Crab Orchard Lake and Little Grassy Lake levels noted near spillways with minor rises.
In Mineola New York two funeral chapel workers were charged with grand larceny after allegedly stealing 3780 dollars in winning race tickets from the pocket of a deceased man Samuel Brandt a 62 year old New York City resident who died of a heart attack following the Belmont Park race on May 25 The two suspects William G Hanley and William J Roft both associated with a Manhattan funeral chapel were arrested as they attempted to cash the tickets at the payoff window and detectives recovered the tickets from Brandt s secret pocket during preparation for his burial
In front of the Illinois Capitol a protest drew about 300 people led by George F. Mahin of the Taxpayers Federation of Illinois. He urged demonstrations against higher taxes with placards from Lawrenceville Alton Lincoln Waterman and other towns. Walter Woodcock of Alton spoke on a proposed half penny local sales tax by city action.
Faiths England June 3 AP veteran Peter Barr, 34, blinded near war end, regained sight after a domestic dispute with his wife. He described regaining vision within 10 to 15 minutes following the argument, saying he saw Mrs. Barr clearly. Barr noted the moment at home after years of blindness.
Several contestants returned to poetry for expression. An Anna resident wrote a humorous piece titled Your Befuddled Friend about busy days and household chaos. First place in the entry bundle sweepstakes went to a Carterville fan with 128 entries, while a Carbondale woman earned 120 entries.
Washington March 3 Leaders of reserve and veterans groups urged President Eisenhower to back the administration bill to expand the reserve force to about four times its present strength. They said they would mobilize public support through a National Security Committee, while the House stalled over anti segregation amendments.
Gov. Goodwin Knight halted the scheduled executions of Barbara Graham John A. Sifito and Emmett Perkins in Sacramento to hear 11th hour pleas to the California Supreme Court. Attorneys for Graham sought a writ of habeas corpus and a new argument based on a recent wiretapping ruling while the delay was announced an hour before the planned execution time.
Peoria on June 3 AP reports a fire destroyed the Illinois Furniture Store, leaving only four charred walls of the two story brick building. The blaze began 25 minutes after closing. Cause and damage estimates were not determined by owner Joseph Vievitch or firefighters.
Evan R. Dale of Carbondale faces a Springfield trial July 11 for income tax evasion. Prosecutors say he failed to report payoffs from contractors during his charge of 38,000 AFL laborers with carriers in Southern Illinois and Kentucky, totaling $104,656 in evaded taxes. Dale was previously convicted in December of attempting to extort $1.03 million from a power plant contractor at Joppa and extorting $7,500 from a subcontractor. A bill of particulars alleges he received $153,841 from contractors over six years for labor peace. Also on June 10 George W. Gruenewald of Belleville, ex-St Clair County sheriff, will face tax evasion charges for 1948-30 taxes of $9,426, with John Hoban to again defend Dale.
A mortuary attendant discovered a four month premature baby girl alive after being pronounced dead by an osteopath. The infant, born to Mrs. M C Dupree, was moved to a hospital and placed in an air lock after initial respiratory efforts. Doctors credited movement and prior artificial respiration with reviving the child, who remained in improvement later the same day.
N Y June 3 AP report recalls Kane who says he has had one foot in the grave since 1880 after an accident during a serenade. A shotgun wound to his right foot led to amputation above the ankle. his parents bought a cemetery plot but buried the foot instead.
Corpus Christi residents report vandalism at a shopping center where two cars were damaged. Jerry Schmitz found the letters E E on his trunk and later another vehicle bore different initials. Police were notified Thursday after the incidents near the shopping area.
An inquest into Mrs. Nona Johnson's traffic death was postponed after Williamson County coroner Sam Simmons and Franklin County coroner Barney Browning disputed which coroner should preside. Johnson, 32, a Marion Memorial Hospital nurse, died after a Tuesday night collision near Johnston City. Different counties claim the death occurred within their jurisdiction, delaying proceedings scheduled for tonight.
Four gunmen robbed a West Side Cleveland Trust Co branch ten minutes after opening. Wearing stockings, they guarded tellers while one man grabbed cash from drawers and loaded two drawers into a waiting car. Teller Lisa Zieba reported $15,500 missing. $10,000 was later thought overlooked.
The Illinois House completed passage of bills broadening the curriculum and removing the word teachers from Northern Illinois State Teachers College at DeKalb.
Five children of Mr and Mrs Robert Dupree died when a frame house burned near Colusa California on Thursday night firemen reported the parents were away from home.
