Carbondale bank seeks 1 million bonds for new downtown building
The Carbondale City Council backed issuing up to 1 million in industrial development revenue bonds to fund a Bank of Carbondale facility downtown. The plan, discussed at tonight’s 7 p.m. meeting, envisions a one level, 6,100 square foot bank with a 6,100 square foot basement, fronting on North Marion Street near Main Street. The bank will relocate from 101 N Washington St and raze the old building for parking and green space. The bonds will be privately placed with a bank consortium, and the project aims to boost downtown redevelopment, with backing from mayor Hans Fischer and several council members. The Citizens Downtown Redevelopment Committee has proposed a district around Washington Street. the council has yet to review that plan. The proposal follows two years of planning and a move from Vergennes in 1970 with assets around 4 million, now about 23 million.
