Zeigler No 4 mine closes down east of Johnston City
Zeigler No. 4 mine east of Johnston City has shut down with about 230 workers laid off. The 4 p.m. Friday closure follows a lack of market for the coal and a wildcat strike that prevented a $10 000 ton test order from being filled. The mine began in 1945 and has produced about 500 000 tons annually, with an estimated 50 million tons in reserves in 1978. No official notice has been received by the United Mine Workers district office in West Frankfort.
