Pfc. Naser Abdo, 21, AWOL from Fort Campbell, admitted planning an attack on Fort Hood after police and a gun shop clerk halted his scheme. Authorities say he had a backpack bomb in a motel room along with firearms and ammunition, and he had previously voiced objections to service in Iraq or Afghanistan. Governor Perry commended the quick work of police and the FBI.

NYPD Tests Groundbreaking Dirty Bomb Detection System

The NYPD is testing a new counterterror technology to detect radiological threats. A lower Manhattan command center will monitor 2,000 mobile detectors carried by officers daily and issue real-time wireless alerts if readings indicate a dirty bomb. Federal authorities oversee the test as it hopes to be refined for wider use. Jessica Tisch notes it is unique to New York City and has already seen field testing.
