IDOT orders fuel cuts as summer mowing tightens costs

IDOT Secretary Timothy W. Martin directs highway districts to cut fuel use by five percent this summer, saving about 72 000 gallons and 200 000 dollars. Grass cutting on interstates will drop from three to two mowings, shoulders trimmed to 15 feet, with extra mowing where needed for sight lines. District nine oversees southern counties and specific routes like Illinois 18 and U S 51. Next mowing starts in August, while safety and sight distances stay a priority.
