Twelve year old Alli Ragan of Carbondale defended her title at the 35th Annual United States Judo Association Junior National Championships winning the 38 Kilogram division for the third time and taking intermediate division with every match decided by ippon. She has trained five years and also holds Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation state champion honors with sensei Sang Tiu Han, SIU graduate student.

Herrin Tigers Basketball Hallmarks a 1994 Run and a Tragic Loss
In 1994 Herrin High School, under coach Mike Newbold, surged from a 5-18 start to reach its first sectional final in 31 years as part of the new Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference. The Tigers, featuring Brett Shemwell and others, faced Massac County before losing to Pinckneyville, finishing 10-19. Brett Shemwell died later that year in a car crash, leaving a lasting impact on the program and Newbold’s recollections of a defense‑driven, physical squad.
