Bill would gift 600 acres to Kane County entities

A tucked bill would give 600 acres worth about 20 million dollars from state land near a St. Charles corrections center to the cities of St. Charles and Geneva and to the St. Charles Park District. Labor officials from Southern Illinois decry the move as conflicting with Gov. George Ryan's budget belt-tightening push. The land, largely leased from the Illinois Department of Corrections, sits adjacent to a state facility. Union officials say the measure amounts to a windfall amid spending cuts.

Snow Geese Shine On Illinoisan Birdwatching Trip

Spectacular flock of snow geese became the high point of a Sunday birding tour across Southern Illinois. The day started at Mermet Lake near Vienna with limited birds, then moved to Union County Conservation Area where a loggerhead shrike and a large snow goose congregation fascinated two observers. The journey included sightings of pintails, mallards, several raptors, and a lone bald eagle before the standout snow geese drew attention.
