Fire deaths tied to missing smoke alarm at Herrin apartment

Three Herrin residents, Alice Rose Brown and her two children Kevin Michael and Christina Louise, died in a Saturday fire at 511 N Fifth St. The federally funded unit lacked a required smoke alarm under city rules. Codes administrator Lindell Coriasco said the occupancy permit ordinance did not apply to the housing authority units, which led to disputes over enforcement. The fire likely started behind the living room divan from wiring, and a hydrant used in firefighting reportedly required a sledgehammer to open. The city plans to require compliance with its laws despite housing authority objections.
