Justice allows clean air lawsuits against power plants
The Justice Department says lawsuits over clean air violations at 51 power plants will proceed, while the outcome hinges on whether environmental regulations are relaxed. The cases allege plants boosted output without required pollution controls, a stance disputed by utilities as overly broad readings of the Clean Air Act. Environmentalists fear deregulatory moves, while New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer calls the department action a boost to prosecutions. Plants named include Alabama Power, Cincinnati Gas & Electric, Georgia Power, Illinois Power, Ohio Edison, Pennsylvania Power, and Southern Indiana Gas & Electric.

Bush seeks wider trade power at Port of New Orleans
President Bush urged the Senate to grant him fast track trade authority to push U.S. goods into world markets and spur jobs as he framed opposition as anti growth. He cited unemployment and accused a Democratic Senate of stalling trade legislation. Democrats and labor groups fear the authority could threaten jobs and weaken environmental protections.
