Herrin Man in Veit Nam Battle Not Injured

Lt Col John C Hughes 41 of Herrin was in the Pleiku attack zone but uninjured. Mauldin eyewitness reports him commanding the 52nd Army Aviation Battalion. he has 22 years service and 11 months in Vietnam. His wife Ann Abernathy Hughes notes plans to return March 3 and that Hughes has earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Vietnamese decorations.

Sentry Pyle Dies in Pleiku Viet Cong Attack

At Pleiku air base in South Viet Nam, Spec. 5 Jesse A. Pyle from Marina California halted Viet Cong saboteurs as they planted explosives. He died from a blast while being taken to the infirmary. Eight Americans were killed and over 100 wounded as mortars followed.

License deadline for 1965 plates set at Feb 15

Springfield AP Powell announces the display deadline for 1965 automobile license plates remains midnight February 15. He notes passenger plate sales on February 3 are 126000 behind last year and that enforcement will not arrest or convict those with applications filed before February 1. Our figures show only a small percentage may be inconvenienced by being stopped for noncurrent plates.

Rails Unions Reach Final Agreement on Major Labor Contract

Washington Feb 8 Five non-operating rail unions and the railroads reach a final agreement shielding most members from layoff and granting carriers new transfer flexibility. The package covers about 290000 workers under the attrition rule and caps job abolitions at six percent annually while constraining layoffs to business declines.

SIU Families to Leave Viet Nam Evacuation Planned

About two dozen dependents of Southern Illinois University faculty will be evacuated from Viet Nam within 10 days to two weeks. Eleven of the thirteen faculty members have wives and children with them. thirteen children total. Families may relocate to Manila Bangkok Hong Kong or return to the United States.

Kosygin Says Powers Seek Peace But Strengthen Defenses

Soviet Premier Kosygin told reporters in Hanoi that the Soviet Union China and North Vietnam do not want war but must strengthen the might and defensive capacity of Communist countries. He affirmed Soviet support for North Vietnam and the Viet Cong front line in the struggle against imperialism.
