Illinois enacts multiple new laws effective January 1 addressing rape victim access to emergency contraception with hospital notification, Ecstasy crackdown lowering drug sale thresholds, school records for abuse cases, and stricter fines and license penalties for drivers failing to yield to emergency vehicles.
The Associated Press outlines new Illinois statutes starting Jan 1 including policies against bullying in schools, agency notifications for abused children, penalties for intimidating private school attendees, a statewide missing child alert system, FOID card tampering penalties, surrender requirements for felons with guns, a drug-use detection pilot for prisoners, removal of drunkenness as a defense, rape victim information rights, higher drunken driving fines for trauma centers, harsher penalties for reckless driving near emergency vehicles, license restrictions after reckless homicide, posthumous diplomas for WWII and Korean War veterans, firing on first drug-use offense for prison guards and state police, gun ownership trace requirements, and honors for veterans and educators via license plates.
AmerenCIPS awarded a $250000 Smartlights grant to the Southern Illinois Research Park to fund a new entrance sign and energy efficient lighting. The project aims to cut energy costs, boost Carbondale’s image, and attract over 50000 visitors annually, to be completed by July 1.
