Du Quoin reduces speed limit after shopping center crashes
In Du Quoin Illinois traffic changes at the Southtowne Shopping Center coincide with a drop in the U S 51 speed limit from 45 to 35 mph and the removal of the double exit lane replaces with a single painted arrow. Police report few incidents since the changes while residents credit safer exits and slower speeds. Mayor Robert Armstrong and Police Chief Kenneth DeMent note clearer sight lines and reduced speeds have lowered crash risk, with a brief warning period given to adjust.
