Swinford breaks the vote to raise Herrin taxes by $10
Mayor Donald Swinford pushed through a partial abatement of 40,000 of a 90,000 tax levy for the Herrin Building Commission, lifting residents’ taxes by 50,000 annually. The council previously abated the full levy, funding bond retirement for the city hall. Several Aldermen warned residents on fixed incomes and debated alternatives, including garbage fees and new wheel and utility taxes. The measure passed 4 to 4 with Swinford breaking the tie.
