A reader recounts a used car dispute where a dealer refused to cover repairs and notes a broader congressional battle over FTC rules requiring disclosure of known defects and potential warranties. The piece argues the rule would aid consumers and protect honest dealers against a dishonest minority.

Candlelight for Poland Lights a Nation's Conscience

An opinion piece critiques limited sanctions on Poland and laments the Russians' grip. Letters Unions defend workers

Editor, Southern Illinoisan. Question: When a person is fired from his or her job, does a boss have to explain his decision? Answer: In non union shops, no. More than 75 percent of American workers lack the protection of a contract and can be fired at will, with or without cause. Many workers do not realize how totally unprotected they are. Always demand to know why you are being let go. At the least, you'll gain insight that will help you avoid trouble in your next job. You may find it wasn't your fault, and that may help you win concessions. Or you may become convinced you've been discriminated against. If see, you can call a lawyer which will cost you plenty or take your case to the local office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Better still, to avoid all of the above, join a union today. With a good union, your job and all of the benefits you are entitled to will be protected.

Springer reroutes Ohio campaign finance with big donors

In Ohio Jerry Springer redefines fundraising by attracting nearly 1.2 million dollars from under 600 contributors, averaging close to two thousand dollars each. He targets new donors among 30s and 40s, many affluent business people seeking involvement beyond the top-down political money. Critics doubt his electability, while supporters say he reshapes the race and deserves serious consideration. Celeste and other top contenders acknowledge his potential impact even as they weigh his colorful past and rising appeal.
