Bowen Center marks sixth year amid hepatitis outbreak and expansions
A.L. Bowen Children's Center in Harrisburg reflects on 1971, detailing an actual hepatitis outbreak in spring and a summer green flu strike by staff amid a Local 779 protest. The center expanded its service area to Region Five, gained federal grants for staff development and education programs, increased admissions in several units, and planned 1972 programs for emotionally disturbed children. The year featured strong payroll activity, accreditation efforts, and community gifts such as an eight passenger van for field trips.
