Southern Illinois residents asked to track trumpeter swans
The Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory at Southern Illinois University asks residents to report trumpeter swan sightings this winter. Director Al Woolf says about 70-80 swans are expected in the region, with past congregations near Burning Star No. 5 Mine by DeSoto. Residents should call toll free 866-401-5673 with sightings and counts.

The coot is a gray duck like rail with a white bill and frontal shield. It nests on water using dead leaves and reeds and lays 8 to 10 pinkish eggs. Breeding ranges span western Canada to New York, wintering to British Columbia, Kansas, Illinois and Massachusetts.
