Boy Killed in Holiday Crash in Carbondale

In Carbondale a 9-year-old De Soto boy, Johnathan Drake Sanders, died when icy roads caused a two-vehicle collision near The Crossings on Christmas Eve. Steven Mitchell, 48, and Crystal Sanders, 9, were injured but stable. Gary Weis, 48, and passengers in his truck had minor injuries. North Korea moves fuel rods into reactor

Local surgeons adopt oxidized zirconium knee implants

Herrin based Southern Illinois Orthopedic Center doctors among first in the nation to use a new knee replacement implant made of oxidized zirconium. The metal ceramic alloy reportedly reduces wear by about 85 percent versus cobalt chrome, potentially extending implant life and benefiting younger or more active patients including those with nickel sensitivity.
