MRI may replace angiograms in heart tests

Researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center show MRI based imaging can detect diseased coronary arteries in most patients, offering a less invasive alternative to catheter based X ray angiograms. In trials involving 109 patients at six sites the MRI method identified all diseased arteries in 75 percent and most critical blockages in 89 percent, though not as thorough as angiograms. Experts caution further refinement before clinical adoption, but anticipate sharper images and broader use within five years.
