The Associated Press notes 602 motor vehicle deaths during the Christmas weekend, with 67 fire deaths and 105 from other accidents, pushing total accidental fatalities to 774. Illinois records show 40 auto deaths, plus 3 in fires and 5 other causes for 48 statewide.

An Air Force pilot mislanded a jet trainer at Los Angeles International Airport and crashed through a fence onto a busy boulevard striking a car driven by Mrs. Louise La Montaigne of Oakland. Her husband Martin was also involved. Vernon Swanson of Inglewood avoided injury. Mrs. La Montaigne suffered serious injuries. the pilot ejected and was found away from the burning jet.
Moscow December 27 AP delegates to the Supreme Soviet spent six hours praising the Kremlin's 1956 budget with a promised cut in defense spending. The budget sets expenditures at 568.8 billion rubles and revenues at 590.192 billion with defense at 102.2 billion rubles about 18 of total. The 1955 budget had higher defense outlay and the plan awaits further parliamentary action.
Brooklyn star pitcher Johnny Podres, key in the Dodgers World Series win, is reclassified 1-A and liable for military service. The 23 year old from Witherbee, New York, previously listed as unfit due to a back ailment underwent two Army physicals after being drafted.
Former Republican C W Runt Bishop of Carterville said he will not seek a 1956 Congress seat. The 65 year old, who served seven terms, was defeated by Democrat Kenneth Gray in 1954 for Illinois 25th District. President Eisenhower will send his State of the Union message to Congress on January 5, two days after the new session opens. The White House said the timing followed a conference with Secretary of State Dulles and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. In Roseburg Oregon a mudslide destroyed a canyon home killing Marion Neal Acerena Neal and three of their children Mary 15 Becky 2 Tom 17 with three other children surviving Margaret Elaine 13 Billy 6 and Alvis 8. The slide swept the house 300 feet across a field and blocked access for hours before authorities reached the scene.
A 19 year old from Muncie Indiana named Richard Stanley stood on a water tower railing seeking to leap but yielded to promises from Patrolman Lloyd Wagner and Assistant Fire Chief Robert Hole who confronted him from the catwalk and aerial ladder respectively.
