Miami city engineers order 500 new manhole covers to prevent heel catching lawsuits. New covers will be inches across, replacing old ones inch diameter after a woman sued for a fall caused by the previous design.
Indian Prime Minister Nehru said Chou En Lai told Eisenhower the U S should consider a friendly stance toward Communist China. He cited gains in Soviet democratization, noted U S Russia disarmament talks, and described Hungary and Suez concerns while predicting a New Delhi Chou En Lai meeting on December 30.
Phoebe Ditzler of Ora Township Jackson County died at her home after a year long illness. Survived by husband Ed Ditzler daughter Betty Deetch and three grandchildren and sisters Alice Fore and Anna G. Davis. Funeral services set for Friday at 1 30 p m at First Baptist Church Ava with burial in Ava Evergreen Cemetery.
Leo C. Mann of Pinckneyville received a $90,000 court award after losing his right leg when a Missouri Pacific Railroad freight engine backed forward against his order in the Pinckneyville yards. His attorney Louis G. Davidson said the engineer ignored Mann's instruction.

Four men were arrested in New York on charges of transporting stolen Gulf Oil geological and seismographic maps across state lines. Authorities say a Gulf employee, deeply in debt from gambling, stole top secret maps worth millions to pay New York racketeers. The arrests followed a raid on the U S Tackless Corp in the Bronx and recovered maps at the carpet firm.
S. Sgt. Howard Berrian, 27, an airman stationed at Chanute Air Force Base, pleaded guilty to the November 9 robbery of the First National Bank of Thomasboro and received concurrent five year prison terms on six counts. He confessed he acted alone.
Open verdict returned in the McConachie inquest after testimony that McConachie fell forward on his right side. McConachie died from injuries to the back of his head.
Cape Girardeau County Coroners Jury returned an open verdict on the death of 44 year old Donald W McConachie of Sparta after an inquest in Cape Girardeau. He died November 29 at St Francis Hospital from head injuries believed to be from unknown causes.
