Judge weighs ESOP stock sale as United teeters
A bankruptcy judge in Chicago denied an emergency request to allow selling up to 40 million dollars of United Airlines employee stock ownership plan stock. Chief Judge Eugene Wedoff kept a stock sale ban in place at least through December 30, citing complex facts. The ESOP, created in 1994 with 75,000 members, once held about 55 percent of United’s shares before State Street Bank began sales, and the bank was halted by court order after United filed for bankruptcy on December 9.
