Springfield lawmaker resigns over health after 22 years

Democrat Margaret Smith announced her resignation from the Illinois state Senate after 22 years in Springfield. She was hospitalized during the fall veto session and now lives in a nursing home. No successor has been appointed and her exact ailment was not disclosed.

United unions review plan for 2.4 billion annual labor cuts

United Airlines unions met with advisers to review a bankruptcy restructuring plan. The proposal seeks 2.4 billion dollars in annual labor savings within two months, far above the roughly 1 billion planned earlier. Death penalty opponents march 37 miles to Chicago

About 30 former inmates from Illinois and other states began a 37 mile relay walk from Stateville Correctional Center to downtown Chicago to urge Gov. George Ryan to commute all death sentences to life without parole. The letter was to be delivered during a Chicago performance of The Exonerated and amid a weekend of speeches and town hall events with judges, legislators, and victims’ families watching closely as Ryan nears his January 13 term end.
