A Year After Maytag Closing Broom Grinds Back to School
Broom, a Maytag plant laid off worker, describes life a year later. She battles health needs with annual MRI and chemo risk, but now attends Rend Lake College in Health Information Technology. She earns no pay for class work at Rea Clinic while family, church, and Man-Tra-Con assist. Her daughter Meagan and son Levi aid in tough times as Meagan plans to rejoin college and Levi stays busy with a paper route. Broom cites relief in education and hopes for VA Medical Center work in Marion, prioritizing growth over the former job glow.
