NIU bans national anthem at home basketball games
NIU president Richard J. Nelson forbids playing the national anthem at home basketball games to curb racial tensions after minor incidents last year. The policy started with the Dec. 4 home opener at the 4,050 seat Edmund Field House, amid black power salutes and boos during the anthem. Nelson said the anthem should inspire unity, but in certain contexts can cause division, and he notified the Board of Regents who would not challenge his decision.
