Fifty seven veterans receiving care at the Anna state hospital were hosted by the VFW auxiliary of Anna for a pre holiday party. The group served hamburgers and toffee and gave homemade candies and cigarettes. Fern Davis, hospital chairman, distributed the department’s Christmas gifts including fruits candy bars cigarettes and a handkerchief.
Members of the Carroll P. Foster post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars installed a television set at the VFW home north of Anna. Custodians Leon Brimm and Dennis Bittle operate the set, providing reception from St. Louis and Memphis stations. A turkey dinner for 80 followed, hosted by the auxiliary, with games and TV program viewing.
Jackson county district soil conservation directors discussed plans for their annual meeting in late January or early February. The group held their first regular session in their new office at 1006 Walnut Street Murphysboro. Farm soil conservation plans were approved for November for six Campbell Hill farms, Paul Luescher, Theodore Kueker, Ester.
The board notes 226 completed soil conservation plans covering 40000 acres since the program began June 1 1945. They report several applications on hand for 1950 assistance and sent sympathy to chairman Henry Quernheim who is currently hospitalized.
The Cobden church marked its diamond jubilee with a holiday bazaar and noon dinner in the church basement. Mrs. Jack Williams chaired events and Mrs. George Rich led dinner arrangements. Booths offered aprons, crochet work, candies, luncheon cloths, and dresses to support church funds. Rev. Leon DeForrest serves as pastor.
About 20 Jackson county attor neys and their wives attended the annual Ladies Night dinner meeting of the Jackson County Bar association at the Jackson Country club Thursday night. Bob Sen of W I L Carbondale impersonated. Lee Ellis of Southern Illinois university sang and played piano. Members and guests joined in group singing. John Searing of Carbondale chaired the entertainment committee. John Feirich of Carbondale and Omer Jones of Murphysboro served on the committee. John Stewart of Murphysboro is association president.
The Anna Jonesboro Community High School glee club will perform the Christmas portions of The Messiah by Handel at First Methodist Church in Anna Sunday at 2 30 pm. Keith Whetstone directs with Mrs A T Ayers organist and Phyllis Lord pianist. Fred C Grams rites set in Evanston and Gibson City burial.
Mr and Mrs Michael Manzie welcomed a baby at St Anthony s hospital in Chicago that arrived with two front teeth offering a curious Christmas image for the family.
