Grinch steals tops off 28 Fraser firs from Tipton farm

Authorities hunt a thief or thieves after Fraser fir tops were sawn from about 28 trees 10 to 12 feet tall on Danny Tipton's farm near the North Carolina border between Nov 24 and last week. Tipton, who supplies trees to businesses and churches, valued at roughly $100 each, said the culprits likely sold smaller tops for use in smaller homes. Sheriff Kent Harris and Maj. Ronnie Adkins decried the crime as despicable at Christmastime. Tipton still has about 6,000 trees maturing on the farm. The pilfered firs were ready for sale when taken.
