U S protests Sakharov treatment over hunger strike
The State Department protests the handling of Andrei Sakharov in Gorky as he continues a hunger strike. Walter Stoessel pressed Soviet envoy Besmertnykh and sought a copy of a Senate resolution backing Sakharov amid concerns over harassment and scientific exchanges. Moynihan urged action, warning of consequences for Soviet American ties and visa exits for a young woman.
