Dorothy Spomer and Sandra Day OConnor Trail Break in Law

Dorothy Spomer of Cairo and Sandra Day OConnor of Arizona broke early barriers in law. Spomer became the first woman elected judge in Illinois First Judicial Circuit and served on the Illinois Appellate Court, while OConnor was the first woman nominated for the U S Supreme Court. Both were top students and joined politics cautiously, balancing family life with advancing judicial careers. Spomer retired from the bench in 1977 after 27 years and later returned to appellate work. OConnor rose to national prominence after lengthy service in Arizona politics and a Supreme Court nomination.
