Appleton pitches two sites for Murphysboro public housing
Murphysboro Mayor Sydney Appleton proposed two potential sites on the east and west edges of town for family public housing to the Jackson County Housing Authority board. He avoided naming exact locations to prevent price inflation and noted the sites are rundown in otherwise nice neighborhoods. Housing Authority Director James Seed said one site is under consideration but not all homeowners may consent to sale. The board recently extended a one-year option for a city lot on Mulder Street for an elderly high rise, with HUD warning of delays if Murphysboro cannot find 64 housing units. Former Circuit Judge Peyton Kunce joined the board, Jessie Miller was elected chairman, Louis Wills re-elected vice chair, and the authority bought vehicles from Vic Koenig Chevrolet in Carbondale.

SIU to seek repayment on state scholar awards
SIU Carbondale will require about 1600 students who received Illinois State Scholarship Commission awards of 625 or less last spring to repay 100 dollars or the full amount if under 100. Billing in September may offer installment options pending a new computerized system. The issue stems from a 2.6 million dollar shortfall and legislative aid delays.
