North Dakota Wheat Harvest Poised to Beat Last Year
North Dakota farmers see a rebound after a 20 year low with a record planted 12 million acres and a July 1 USDA forecast of 365 million bushels. Hard red spring lead, durum and winter wheat rise, while prices and drought concerns temper optimism amid high input costs and evolving demand from the Soviets and Chinese. Blake Humphrey, Doug Larson, and Neal Fisher are quoted on yields, markets, and risk as harvest begins.

Hearings on Illinois erosion guidelines open next week
Public hearings begin August 24 in Southern Illinois to collect testimony on erosion control guidelines. Illinois loses about 6.7 tons of soil per acre annually. Local soil and water conservation districts will craft district guidelines, reviewed by the Department of Agriculture, under a voluntary approach to avoid a federal mandate. A $500,000 cost share funded last year supported conservation tillage, with Perry County SWCD distributing grants to farmers new to such practices, covering about 400 acres and cutting erosion by an estimated 30 tons per acre. The program's fiscal year 1982 funding ended, but districts hope voluntary farmer participation continues.
