Israel shelves West Bank settlement plan until Camp David
The Israeli Cabinet suspended plans to build five new Jewish settlements in the West Bank until after the Camp David summit. Cabinet Secretary Naor said the matter would be discussed after the meeting. Carter will host the September summit with Begin and Sadat to revitalize peace talks. Begin, absent from the session, is vacationing. Ariel Sharon also missed. Yadin opposed the timing of the settlement move though his party supports more outposts. The settlements lie in a sparsely populated Jordan Valley area targeted for security reasons by Labor. The U.S. calls settlements illegal as deadlock constrains negotiations. Carter stressed the U.S. will be a full partner at the Mideast summit and not just a messenger.
